EUS Guided Gastric Varices Coiling
EUS guided coiling – gastric varices
In patients with liver cirrhosis or blockage of the portal vein – a condition called “portal hypertension”, occasionally “dilated blood vessels i.e. veins” can be seen in the stomach termed as “gastric varices”. These veins have thin walls and can rupture and bleed, which can be life threatening. In such patients, a procedure called Endosonographic guided “coil” placement can be performed.
In this procedure, under endoscopic sonography guidance the vessels are identified, followed by advancement of the needle and placement of a coil. The coil leads to clot formation and eventually the vessel gets obliterated.
